Phlomis cashmeriana (Kashmir Sage)

Contact your local county Extension office through our County Office List. This perennial foxglove is native to the high mountains of southern Spain where it endures drought and hot summers. It features unique flowers of burnt-orange on wiry stems and if deadheaded can continue to flower through the summer. Cherry Skullcap Scutellaria suffrutescens is noted for providing a continuous display of hot, cherry-red flowers through the summer and into the weeks of autumn.

This low, mounding plant prefers a sunny location and well-drained soil and is perfectly suited for the rock garden, raised beds or the front of a border. It has proven to be perennial in protected sites in USDA zone 5a, but is marginally hardy in exposed locations.

Hopflower Oregano Origanum libanoticum is a vigorous, trailing herb with unique hop-like, chartreuse colored bracts that enclose lavender flowers. These appear throughout the summer and continue adding interest into the autumn as they dry to a taupe brown and rustle in the fall breeze. This is a perfect plant when positioned to cascade over the edge of a raised bed or in a rock garden. Bluestem Joint Fir Ephedra equisetina is a shrub with finely textured blue-green stems that are evergreen in all seasons.

In the spring a show of small yellow flowers appears, often followed by orange-red berries on more mature plants. This shrub is extremely heat and drought tolerant and the dense branching and evergreen appearance make this an exceptional plant for winter interest in the xeriscape.

This drought tolerant perennial brings texture and contrast when combined with other xeriscape plants. The low growing mounds hold persistent foliage into the winter providing interest wherever it is grown. Chocolate Flower Berlandiera lyrata is a native wildflower of the Southwest that produces a continuous succession of dark-eyed yellow daisies over rosettes of soft green foliage. Chocolate Flower is a hardy perennial although somewhat short-lived.

It will reseed freely and is very drought tolerant. Cashmere Sage Phlomis cashmeriana is a hardy perennial that is perfect for the perennial border. Tall and stately in form with textured leaves and whorls of showy lavender-pink flowers, Cashmere Sage will be a stand-out in the garden.

The sturdy stems and architectural form continue to add interest in the fall and winter as the flowers give way to attractive heads of seed that persist. James Klett discusses the history of PlantTalk Colorado. Click here to view the history of PlantTalk Colorado.

Silky Scent Aromas

What a strange spring and early summer this has been. Typically April, May and early June are packed with both activity in my own garden and road trips to a whole litany of garden tours throughout California plus wherever else I can manage to get myself to. For the last few years the Garden Bloggers Fling meetup has been a much anticipated few days touring beautiful gardens across the US and talking gardening with the eclectic group of folks who attend. All this free time AND a new-to-me house and garden has kept me semi-permanently gardening in my head, surveying my new space and formulating one plan after another for changes I want to make.

I purchased my Russian Sage as the standard, tall plant years ago. It grew and bloomed fantastically for 12 years! However, I should have paid more attention to its growing requirements, specifically to avoid "winter wet. Our specific location is on the side of a small mountain, and is subjected to biting, swirling winds without very much sunshine. So the conditions for my poor Russian Sage were not good: long-lasting layers of ice and snow covering the wet soil, and less than ideal drainage in the best of times.

Seed morphology tends to vary between the clades; dicot seeds are typically bi-lobed, symmetrical, and have a line of dehiscence separating the two cotyledons, whereas monocot seeds lack these characteristics and are usually more round or irregular in shape.

Salvias for Texas-Tough Summer Color

Phlomis cashmeriana is a tough, durable, long-blooming perennial that grows to 2 feet 60 cm tall and spread out to form a wide mass up to 10 feet 3 m or more. It has densely woolly stems that hold 8 inches 20 cm long leaves broadly rounded at the base and pointed at the tip with a scalloped margin and downy undersides. The large pale lilac-pink flowers bloom in spring and summer. If you wish to plant Phlomis in a container, use a large one filled with compost with a soil foundation. Try not to be too generous in feeding and watering your plant as it grows well in drought. Once your Phlomis begins to form flowers, you may need to do some trimming as it tends to grow uncontrollably.

L ooking for plants that are beautiful to behold, yet tough as nails? If you have a sunny spot in your yard needing vibrant color spring through fall, consider growing salvia, also called sage. There are many that will easily fill the bill. One of the most diverse and useful groups of plants for a Texas landscape are the sages - botanically known as Salvia. Native to many places in the world, including Texas, salvias are a staple option garden designers use to create long-lasting, colorful displays. Garden-worthy salvias range from Texas-tough perennials to tender annuals that have been extensively bred for the bedding plant market.

We all have places in our landscape that greet us with certain challenges. One of the challenges I have recently faced while creating new designs for the Conservation Garden Park are dry shade areas. Those same plants have also created a lot of root competition which makes it difficult for smaller plants to thrive. Luckily, there are some wonderful plants that do well in shade and, as an added bonus, provide some great foliage color to brighten up those shady areas. Whenever I am planning for dry shade, my go-to plant palette typically starts with native plants. Here in Utah we have many beautiful native plant species that are proven successful in our climate. Below are some of my favorite plant selections for the dry shade garden.
